Maynooth is set in the heart of the Kildare countryside, approximately 15 miles west of Dublin. The University is next to the Fitzgerald Castle with its famous association with the rebellion of Silken Thomas. Maynooth has a regular bus service to Dublin and is only 40 minutes away on the suburban rail service.

The University

The first College of Maynooth, under the patronage of the Fitzgeralds, was established in 1518. In 1795 St. Patrick's College Maynooth was established as a seminary by an Act of the British Parliament, and it was opened to lay students in 1966. In 1997 a new separate university, National University of Ireland Maynooth, was established as a constituent university of the National University of Ireland. NUI Maynooth owns a modern 70 bustling acre campus (North Campus) with it science, engineering, teaching, recreational and apartment complexes, and in addition shares with St. Patrick's College the older traditional South Campus with its historic setting, stone buildings and magnificent cloistered chapel complex. It is recognized as one of the most attractive university campuses in Europe. NUI Maynooth presently has 6000 students in its faculties of:
